The Global Food System: The Search for Sustainable Solutions (the "Report"), released by Credit Suisse Research Institute on June 9, found that food is distributed unevenly around the world, wasting $13.6 trillion of food every year.Malnutrition, obesity, the environmental impact of food production and food waste put enormous pressure on the entire global food system.
More than 30 percent of the world's food is wasted, and nearly $408 billion of processed food went unsold or uneaten in 2019, according to the report.About 50 percent of food loss and waste occurs in production and processing, and another 45 percent occurs in circulation and consumption. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates the economic, environmental and social costs of food waste at $2.6 trillion.
